So, the Federation is \u201cfully automated luxury space communism.\u201d Of course there are people who just hang out and don\u2019t contribute, but that\u2019s OK! They don\u2019t need to!<\/p>\n
But what do you do with the people who do<\/em> need to? There are people who use the fact that they\u2019re in a post-scarcity society to research, create, invent, make, that sort of thing. And that enriches their society further!<\/p>\n But what about the people who have a need to \u201cdo\u201d but aren\u2019t<\/em> like that? The real<\/em> misfits, weirdos, maniacs? Turns out, there\u2019s a place for them, too: Starfleet!<\/p>\n Have an obsessive need for hierarchy? Want to create or work with barely-functional cutting-edge and frankly dangerous experimental technology? Eager for volumes<\/em> of rules, full of loopholes, and<\/em> the constant breaking thereof for a \u201chigher purpose?\u201d Then Starfleet\u2019s for you!<\/p>\n It\u2019s a total honeypot! It sure beats having these sorts of people screwing around with the actual<\/em> society that trillions of people live in, and sometimes they can even do some good!<\/p>\n And that\u2019s why \u201cLower Decks\u201d is the most realistic Star Trek<\/em> series.
