It\u2019s a pity, they were comfy shirts and I thought I was<br \/>\nsupporting good people with them.<\/p>\n<p>See, <a href=\"https:\/\/marco.org\/2026\/09\/04\/bob-and-van\">Marco Arment<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2026\/09\/05\/bob-and-van\">John<br \/>\nGruber<\/a> have, for some<br \/>\nreason, decided that now\u2019s the time to let their privilege flag fly, and it\u2019s<br \/>\nnot a good look:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  And I can\u2019t help but feel that maybe we were better off before we knew<br \/>\n  everyone\u2019s hot takes on everything.<\/p>\n<p>  The town coffee shop was just a coffee shop. We weren\u2019t publicly shamed for<br \/>\n  going there because one of the owners was an ass. It was just a place to hang<br \/>\n  out with our friends.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPizza is an open-faced sandwich\u201d is a <em>hot take<\/em>. \u201cChicago-style pizza is a<br \/>\ncasserole\u201d is a <em>hot take<\/em>.  \u201cBrown people are poisoning the blood and soil of<br \/>\nEurope and must be removed\u201d is <em>Nazi shit<\/em> and <em>that\u2019s<\/em> the sort of thing that<br \/>\nDHH, the creator Rails and that slop Linux distribution, has been saying.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  If I learn today that my neighbors have political views that my \u201cside\u201d<br \/>\n  considers unacceptable and unforgivable, should I be able to have dinner at<br \/>\n  their house, shovel their snow, or even greet them outside?<\/p>\n<p>  Should I be condemned for supporting or associating with them in non-political<br \/>\n  contexts?<\/p>\n<p>  Should I be condemned for not publicly condemning them myself?\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, if those \u201cpolitical views\u201d are <em>Nazi shit<\/em> that\u2019s <em>exactly<\/em> what should<br \/>\nhappen.<\/p>\n<p>These are not views about which reasonable people can disagree, like tax policy.<br \/>\nWe\u2019re talking about views that deny the fundamental humanity of some people and<br \/>\nwhose existence is a call for violence.<\/p>\n<p>If Marco or John were not white, straight, cisgender men, they might have<br \/>\nrealized they had to put a lot more work into deciding whether Bob and Van were<br \/>\nsafe neighbors. If they were black, brown, Asian, Jewish, indigenous, gay,<br \/>\ntrans, or women, they would have known that everyone you interact with at<br \/>\nanything more than the most superficial level needs to be vetted for subtle<br \/>\nsigns that they don\u2019t actually see you as a fellow human being&#8211;or that even if<br \/>\nthey see <em>you<\/em> that way, they may see your friends or family differently.<\/p>\n<p>They should ask their respective wives whether they ever had to be concerned,<br \/>\nwhen they lived on their own, whether any of their neighbors might be a<br \/>\nmisogynist or worse, or whether they were able to just give straightforward<br \/>\ntrust to them, and why. It might shed some light on an unfortunate aspect of the<br \/>\nhuman experience that they missed out on.<\/p>\n<p>As for me, I\u2019m <em>glad<\/em> people are finally openly stating that they\u2019re Neo-Nazis<br \/>\nand fellow travelers, and that other people are stating that they\u2019re comfortable<br \/>\nbreaking bread with and supporting Neo-Nazis. It\u2019s important to know because the<br \/>\nfirst step to rooting them out&#8211;and make no mistake, they <em>must<\/em> be rooted<br \/>\nout&#8211;is seeing them clearly.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a German saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  If there\u2019s a Nazi at the table and ten other people sitting there talking to<br \/>\n  him, you got a table with eleven Nazis._\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don\u2019t be one of those ten, no matter how nice you may find that one particular<br \/>\nNazi personally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Looks like I\u2019ll be putting away my Daring Fireball and Accidental Tech Podcast shirts for a while.
